UPDATE 10.23 16th April 2010 :
Latest update on UK aiport closures is that flights remain suspended until 1am 17th April (tomorrow) at the earliest. NATS also advises “Flights in Northern Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland to and from Glasgow and Prestwick will continue to be allowed until 1900 (UK time) subject to individual co-ordination. From 1900 (UK time), forecasts indicate that Scottish airspace may be able to accept domestic flights within Scotland and Northern/Southern Ireland, and North Atlantic flights to/from airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
Further updates should be available from 14.30 today.

10.00 15th April
UK airports, closed from 12pm today, will remain closed until further notice. The closures, due to volcanic ash in UK airspace from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupting in Iceland, will create havoc for many holidaymakers trying to fly today and may cause further delays in the coming few days. Only emergency flights will be allowed, with ordinary planes being grounded due to the possible danger of ash affecting their navigation & landing systems and engines.
NATS, the air traffic control service, states that “from midday until at least 6pm, there will be no flights permitted in UK controlled airspace other than emergency situations. This has been applied in accordance with international civil aviation policy.” The situation will be reviewed later on today and any updates will be reported.
This is the second time the volcano has erupted within the last month, resulting in floods and mass evacuation of areas of Iceland.

I have just received a reminder to pay the balance of my holiday costs. This has arrived after the volcano news. I wonder if i will be covered if the holiday is cancelled as I knew about the risk when paying the balance.
After several false starts to my holiday in Spain due to ash cloud we finally got there in June. The first few days were great and then torrental rain, rain like I’d never seen before, for 3 days solid then ending in fantastic sunshine. All in all perhaps we should have saved our money until next year.
